Careers for makeup artists
Considering Formal Education
While becoming an aspiring makeup artist is a great way to get your feet wet in the makeup world, it’s also a great idea to consider formal education to really hone your skills and gain experience and knowledge for the long run.
This is especially a great idea for those who want a more structured learning experience. Not only will you learn many skills you may have not known before, but you’ll learn so much more – such as the science behind the makeup and what looks good and why, along with how to handle clients and what to charge – which can all help to prepare you for your career and build it successfully, not to mention give you a leg up in the industry.
Becoming a makeup artist is a great career path for many reasons. Not only do you get to make people feel empowered, but you can also boost someone’s self-confidence with a great makeup look. By learning the essential and necessary skills, you’re sure to lead a successful and long-lasting career in the makeup industry.
High Paying Makeup Careers
Every makeup artist looking for a makeup career with a decent pay so that they can make a livable earning. Luckily, makeup artist salaries are looking pretty favorable right now, and demand for these professionals is pretty high.
Makeup artistry is a very broad field, and certain careers within the makeup industry will definitely be higher-paying than others. We’re going to look at some of the top paying makeup careers out there and how you can enter them.
Celebrity Makeup artist
Celebrities are ready to pay to look their best. But being a celebrity makeup artist takes much more than being an amazing MUA. You have to have a great personality and flexibility to boot. Celebrities can be the most fun and interesting makeup clients you’ll ever have! But working with, and around, celebrities can often add to the stress of an already stressful job. You need to be confident in your abilities and have amazing interpersonal and stress management skills.
Theatrical/Performance Makeup Artist
Doing makeup for theater, TV, movies, or other performance arts is a high-stress, high-skills job. Makeup artists in this position need expertise in multiple areas—no two performances are alike. Makeup for performance arts is different than your typical beauty makeup–oftentimes, the makeup artist is required to exaggerate the actor’s features in order to make the character look more realistic. Makeup artists will also need training in at least basic special FX makeup – being able to simulate bruises, cuts, burns, or to age a character quickly and effectively is often part of the job!
Special FX Makeup Artist
With the advent of CGI, you might think special effects makeup is on the decline, but this couldn’t be further from the truth! Special FX makeup is more in demand now than it’s ever been–whether it be in movies, television, theater, entertainment, or special events (zombie run, anyone?) a special fx makeup artist can always find work.
Freelance Makeup Artist
Not everyone makes a career out of being a standalone freelance makeup artist. It’s how most MUAs start out, but most professionals then change gears and go into a different career. For those freelance MUAs who do stick with their career, build up a client base and enhance their expertise through additional training through the years, freelance makeup artistry can be a real cash enrich business! Because you’re the business owner, you get a bigger cut of the client’s fee, AND you can set your own rates.
